48 Hours in Calgary

Whenever I mention I’m from Canada while traveling, people almost always guess Toronto or Vancouver, not Calgary. Honestly, I don’t blame them. As someone who grew up here, I know that Calgary is often overlooked as a destination, but that’s exactly what makes it a hidden gem— a city full of surprises, authenticity, and space to explore without the heavy crowds. From vibrant streets and cozy cafés to parks with stunning views of the skyline, there’s a lot to discover in just 48 hours.

Friday

10:30 A.M. Over Easy Breakfast 

Start your day off at OEB, a popular brunch spot that started in Calgary and has since expanded across Canada and into the U.S. Known for its farm-fresh ingredients and indulgent creations like the breakfast poutines and gourmet bennies, it’s the perfect place to fuel up before exploring the city.

Noon. Exploring Riverfront 

Start at Rotary Park, a hidden gem that’s often overlooked compared to the more famous Crescent Heights lookout. This hilltop park offers panoramic views of Calgary’s skyline and the Centre Street Bridge, along with benches, picnic tables, and an off-leash dog area. Perfect for photos and enjoying the city from above.

From Rotary Park, take a leisurely stroll downhill to Prince’s Island Park, a peaceful urban oasis along the Bow River. Think of it as Calgary’s equivalent of Central Park in New York, a green heart of the city where locals gather, jog, picnic, or simply enjoy the river views. Continue along the riverwalk to the striking Peace Bridge, ideal for capturing modern architecture and the scenic riverside charm. 

1 P.M. Flavours from the Garden  

Nestled in the heart of Prince’s Island Park, River Café is known for its commitment to sustainability. The restaurant even has their own on-site edible garden, producing many herbs, berries, and edible flowers during the short growing season. These freshly harvested ingredients are thoughtfully incorporated into their culinary offerings, including cocktails, enhancing the dining experience with locally sourced flavors. Grab a coffee, tea, or a refreshing drink and toast to local flavors and eco-friendly delights.

2:30 P.M. City, Culture & History 

Head downtown for a blend of modern architecture, local culture, and a touch of history. Start with Calgary’s iconic Central Library, a modern architectural masterpiece that immediately draws the eye with its sweeping curves, warm western cedar archway, and intricate mosaic of windows. Inside, the four-story space continues to impress with soaring vaulted ceilings, winding staircases, colorful murals, and a massive Oculus skylight that floods the interior with natural light. Beyond its architectural beauty, the library is designed for functionality and exploration, offering open reading areas, cozy corners, and plenty of spots perfect for photos or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

From the library, it’s an easy 16-minute walk to Stephen Avenue through the heart of downtown or, if you prefer, you can hop on the C-Train at the nearby City Hall/Bow Valley College station, which is within Calgary’s downtown Free Fare Zone, making the ride completely free.

Stephen Avenue, Calgary’s iconic 8th Avenue, is the city’s original hub for entertainment and commerce. Lined with nearly three dozen historic buildings, it offers lively street performances, unique local shops, and a variety of dining and nightlife options, including Barbarella, Wednesday Room, and the Guild. For a taste of Calgary’s western heritage, stop by Lammle’s, a classic western wear store that has outfitted locals, tourists, and even celebrities such as Usher and Tiesto at this very store during the Calgary Stampede. The Stampede itself, known as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, is a 10-day rodeo and festival that attracts over one million visitors each year and features fairs, parades, chuckwagon races, agricultural competition, stage shows, and much more. 

6 P.M. A Taste of the Beltline 

Calgary’s Beltline is at the heart of the city’s growing food and drink scene, where innovative restaurants and stylish bars continue to pop up. Start your evening with a fancy cocktail at Proof, ranked among the top 10 best bars in Canada in 2024, and a standout in Calgary’s distinct and evolving bar scene. Then head over to Ten Foot Henry, a local favorite celebrated for its vegetable-focused menu and share-style plates. The charred cabbage ($21 CAD) and cauliflower ($23 CAD) are must-try dishes, and since the restaurant is almost always buzzing, reservations are highly recommended.

9 P.M. Sweet Tooth 

After dinner, satisfy your sweet tooth at Village Ice Cream, which started in Calgary with its first shop in 2012 in Victoria Park. Known for its handcrafted ice cream and new seasonal flavors each month, it has earned a reputation for some of the best ice cream in Calgary.

Saturday 

11 A.M. Exploring 17th Avenue 

17th Avenue is the perfect place to start your morning in Calgary, lined with local coffee shops and boutiques. Grab a coffee at Analog and enjoy the outdoor seating where you can watch the city slowly wake up around you. Or head to Deville, where every cup is brewed from direct-trade beans for a rich, flavorful experience.

Afterward, take a leisurely stroll down the avenue, where you will find unique boutiques and shops such as HG Vintage, Less 17, and From Another. In the summer, the nearby Tomkins Park comes alive with concerts, outdoor movies, and cultural performances, adding even more energy to the street. 

12:30 P.M. Who Needs Italy or New York? World-Class Pizza for Lunch

Calgary may not be the first city you think of for pizza, but its local spots easily compete with the world’s best. Pizza Culture, a Neapolitan-style pizzeria, has earned a spot on the Top 100 Pizzerias in the World. For those who crave the iconic New York foldable slice, Noble Pie is the go-to, especially for their Pepperoni or the famous Sweet Cheesus that keeps people going back for more. If you’re after a lively neighborhood favorite, UNA Pizza delivers with perfectly executed toppings, including their veggie pizza that even non-vegetable lovers will enjoy, all served in a cozy, laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re chasing tradition or something with a twist, Calgary proves you don’t need to fly to New York or Italy for a world-class slice.

6 P.M. Game On: Catch Calgary’s Best Sports in Action 

No matter when you visit Calgary, there’s always a game to catch. In the fall and winter, hockey fans can cheer on the Calgary Flames, experiencing the thrill of live NHL action at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Spring and summer bring the excitement of Surge Calgary basketball games, offering fast-paced, high-energy play. And from summer into early fall, football takes center stage with the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Each season offers a unique atmosphere, from the roar of the crowd to the classic stadium snacks, making a live game a fun and tasty way to experience the city like a local. 

10 P.M. Sip, Stroll, Repeat: The Ultimate Bar-Hopping Guide 

Game over? The night’s just getting started. Head over to Nationals on 10th for the perfect bar-hopping kickoff. Just steps away, CRAFT is right next door, making it easy to keep the night going. Both spots offer a lively atmosphere where you can grab a cold beer, meet locals, and soak in the rooftop patio vibes. With great music, friendly crowds, and a prime location, it’s an ideal post-game hangout for anyone looking to unwind and enjoy the city’s nightlife.
